Ups & Downs, the Homeless the Billionaire and the ATM
December the 24th, in the morning… I was strolling in Paris, trying to find out how the city will prepare for Christmas after the hard time everybody endured here. The distric around La Madeleine surrounded by shopping streets and renowned stores, kind of consumption paradise, is the perfect place to test the atmosphere. I was walking on the Boulevard de la Madeleine when I found a homeless young man sitting on the street in a context which appears to me like a bitter irony.
The man chose unknowingly the entrance of a night club called « Le Milliardaire » (the billionaire). Obviously the large sign in front of the building was not the claim of his questionable future. Now, to enhance even more the absurdity of the situation, the neighbor building on the left is a bank with several ATM in front. But neither homeless nor billionaire need or use ATM.
On that morning the ones using the ATM to grasp some cash, « could » apparently not afford to help a homeless just before Christmas.
I took this picture to fit in a square, as there is no escape for this person. Neither from the side, limited with two strong pillars hidden by two benevolent Christmas trees, nor from the top, representing the enrichment. The three key elements (the man, the building sign and the ATM) are forming a triangle, which center of gravity, the wire mesh, emphasis the isolation from each other.
I hope this person still managed to get some peace and joy for Christmas, at least he could afford to get a warm meal.
