Québec - A Promenade along the Saint-Laurent River
Je me souviens I remember
Que né sous le lys That born under the lily
Je croîs sous la rose. I grow under the rose.
Quebec could be seen as the « Asterix Village » within Commonwealth. People speak French in their great majority and keep tight connections with a lot of empathy to France… As such a rather big village of about 2,5 time France, yet only for 10% of France population. So the keywords here are “vast territories”, “endless horizon” and “nature”. Water is playing a major role in “the beautiful province”, that counts more than 400.000 registered lakes (and probably the same number of unnamed ones), 40% of water borders like the James & Hudson bay, or the Atlantic and the historical importance of its major river the Saint-Laurent.
The Saint-Laurent River belongs to these XXL rivers that deeply influence large regions by all means. With a length of about 1140 km and a width greater than 40 km on more than the half of the river length it has almost the proportion of a sea and enjoys the effect of tides. In the past the river was not only the major way of communication but also shaped durably the coast based on a long lots organization of the agriculture. Today it continues to play a major role in the economy of Québec.
The following pictures were gathered during a promenade along the Saint-Laurent. “Along” to be understood on a wide meaning (at least as wide as the Saint-Laurent itself) as it covers also partially two wonderful regions of Québec, Mauricie and Gaspésie. So let’s discover the variety of landscape and the wildlife along the monumental river together.
